The roots of ISTCI begin at Tranquillity House in Leeward, with early planning and a shared vision.
1986
The International School Turks and Caicos Islands (ISTCI) was officially established in 1987, with its roots dating back to 1986. Originally known as the International School of the West Indies and affectionately referred to as the Leeward School, it began with just 12 students, from Kindergarten to High School, learning in a partially completed building at Tranquillity House in Leeward. From the very beginning, ISTCI was guided by passionate educators, including Monica and Harry Potts (Headmaster), Sylvie Wigglesworth and Becky Carlson, who helped create a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child could thrive.
ISTCI is officially established and opens its first school building.
1987
Doug, one of the school’s earliest supporters, transformed his old white van into ISTCI’s first school bus by adding wooden benches, allowing Becky to shuttle students to and from class. With the beach as their playground and a relaxed, family-like atmosphere, shoes were optional and curiosity was encouraged. That first Christmas, the students staged a heartfelt French-language performance of Tartuffe de Molière, setting the tone for a learning environment rich in creativity and culture. In January 1987, students and teachers proudly moved into their first completed school building, carrying in books and desks by hand. Later that year, Yves Coutissant completed the school’s first landscaping, planting the now-iconic ficus trees that still stand today.
ISTCI expands with a second building and a growing academic programme
1988-1995
In the years that followed, the school continued to grow. The Board of Directors introduced uniforms and shifted the academic focus to elementary education. A second building was added, providing dedicated classrooms, a staff room, and a library. Each year brought new resources and dedicated teachers who shared a commitment to student success. A Preschool programme was launched, and a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) was formed, with parents working tirelessly to support the school’s development. Around this time, Ms Barbara joined the team and became a beloved part of ISTCI’s growing story.
Mr. Ashcroft acquires Leeward Development and ISTCI, supporting the school’s expansion
1996
In 1996, a new chapter began when Mr. Ashcroft purchased Leeward Development and the school. With his support, ISTCI added a fully equipped computer lab, science lab, additional classrooms, and staff spaces. These enhancements marked another step forward in the school’s development as a thriving educational institution.
ISTCI celebrates 30 years of growth, learning, and community
2016
By 2016, ISTCI proudly celebrated 30 years of educating children in the Turks and Caicos Islands. What started as a small community school had grown into a vibrant and dynamic institution offering education from Nursery, beginning at nine months of age, through Year 9. Over the years, the school expanded its programmes and facilities, adding a Nursery School, enhanced language and physical education programmes, specialist teachers, and a swimming pool. Despite its growth, ISTCI has remained deeply connected to its roots in care, community, and educational excellence.
Continued growth with the launch of the Middle School, an expanded Nursery School, and enhanced learning spaces
2020
Recent developments continue to reflect this spirit. The opening of the new nursery school, expansion of the middle school, and addition of new learning facilities highlight ISTCI’s dedication to meeting the needs of today’s learners in a warm and supportive environment.
A new logo is unveiled, honouring ISTCI’s legacy while reflecting its future vision and island identity
2025
Approaching its 40th anniversary, ISTCI unveiled a new logo in 2025 that honours its legacy while looking confidently towards the future. Inspired by the Caribbean Queen Conch and salt crystals of the Turks and Caicos Islands, the new identity symbolises resilience, exploration, and a commitment to holistic education. At the centre of the design is a Fibonacci spiral, representing the natural rhythm of growth and the student’s journey from early discovery to confident self-expression. Its outward expansion reflects continuous learning and adaptability, guiding each child to develop with purpose, perspective, and compassion. The logo captures ISTCI’s evolution as a school where students grow with curiosity, lead with integrity, and step into the world as compassionate global citizens.
ISTCI opens its new swimming pool facility
2026
ISTCI unveiled a newly expanded swimming pool facility in 2026, further enhancing opportunities for physical education, swim training, and competitive swimming. As the only school in the Turks and Caicos Islands with its own on-campus pool, ISTCI continues to invest in facilities that enrich student learning and wellbeing. The expanded facility reflects the school’s commitment to helping students grow with confidence, resilience, and balance.
