Sustainable Practices on Campus
At the International School Turks and Caicos Islands (ISTCI), sustainability is part of everyday life. From recycling to energy conservation and outdoor learning, our school community takes meaningful steps to reduce waste, promote environmental awareness, and care for our planet.
ISTCI’s ongoing initiatives include:
Recycling and Waste Reduction
Students and staff recycle materials and encourage waste-free lunches.
Swap Shop
Families exchange gently used uniforms, books, and supplies to reduce waste and support one another.
Bring Your Mug & Refill
Staff, parents, and students reduce single-use plastics by using reusable mugs and water bottles at school events and throughout the day.
Hot Lunch Sustainability
Students in the Hot Lunch programme bring their own cutlery from home, helping to eliminate disposable plastics.
Sustainable Gardening
Students grow herbs and native plants, learning how local ecosystems thrive through care and respect.
Coastal Clean-ups
Students and families participate in beach and community clean-ups, helping protect the islands’ natural beauty.
Green Our School Initiative
ISTCI proudly participated in the Turks and Caicos Islands’ Greening Our Schools initiative, a national programme led by the Ministry of Education and the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR). The initiative encourages schools to adopt creative and eco-friendly projects in four key areas: waste management, electricity conservation, water conservation, and biodiversity, fostering environmental awareness and sustainable habits among students.
In July 2024, ISTCI received the Green Flag Award, an eco-symbol that recognises excellence in sustainability. The school also earned third place in the primary school category for its waste management project, which helped reduce waste and strengthen environmental awareness across the campus.
This achievement reflects the dedication of ISTCI students, teachers, and families who continue to lead by example through ongoing efforts to reduce single-use plastics, promote recycling and support sustainability throughout the school community.
Looking Ahead
ISTCI continues to advance its sustainability goals each year and invites our community to take part. We welcome ideas and collaboration from families, local organisations, and the wider community. Together, we can inspire environmental awareness and create a lasting impact locally and beyond.
